If you live in or near Scio Township, you have almost certainly heard about the plume of 1,4-dioxane, an industrial solvent that has contaminated an area of groundwater underneath parts of Ann Arbor and Scio Township.
As the plume continues to spread, I have been monitoring the situation closely and keeping in contact with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) about improving the state cleanup standards. As you may know, the DEQ has issued an emergency rule on dioxane, and as it is set to expire in October of this year they are looking to establish a new cleanup rule for dioxane based on best available scientific information. This proposed rule amendment will go through the Administrative Rule promulgation process. There will be a public hearing on the rule on Aug. 22. Details are below:
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
Tuesday, Aug. 22
525 West Allegan St. in Lansing
Patriot Conference Room, Atrium, 1-3 p.m.

Please know that I will continue to keep a close watch over this issue and do everything within my power to ensure that our public drinking water remains clean and safe.
