Rep. Neeley Hosts Scott Elementary School in Lansing
LANSING – State Representative Sheldon Neeley (D-Flint) hosted about 30 students from Scott Elementary School yesterday in Lansing. The school is a part of Flint Community Schools. While in Lansing, the students were treated to an educational experience involving state government at the Capitol.
“It’s important to engage young minds in the civic process from an early age. Their voice will matter in the future, and they need to understand now how they can impact their community,” Neeley said. “This is one of the truly fun experiences I look forward to as a state representative, and I look forward to hosting many more future leaders here in Lansing.”
Scott Elementary School is currently scheduled to be closed due to budget cuts to Flint Community Schools. After the visit by the students, Rep. Neeley announced his commitment to work as an advocate for the school to remain open.
“While I understand the dire straits Flint Community Schools are in financially, they must be committed to offering a high-quality education for all students in the city,” Neeley said. “Closing schools and increasing class sizes elsewhere will have a negative effect on these young minds. We must find ways to keep these schools open.”
