Statement from state Representative Kristy Pagan (D-Canton) on her opposition to legislation threatening local control:
“Today I voted no on House Bill 4052, a bill that would prohibit a local governmental body from adopting or enforcing an ordinance or local policy that regulates the relationship between an employer and its employees or potential employees. This bill limits the ability of locally elected officials to do their job well and serve the people of our community. Under this bill, municipalities that want to attract talent and promote fair labor practices will no longer be able to pass higher minimum wage requirements, nor offer earned sick leave or other benefits. Simply put, this bill is an overreach of state government.
“The ability of local governments to set standards and offer incentives for economic development is critical to the success of Michigan. This bill is a direct assault on the ability of our residents to have their local elected officials represent them freely and fairly. The state legislature should not have power to rule over our local governments.”
